Outdoor Education

Sitting on over 160 acres surrounded by Pikes Peak National Forest, YMCA Camp Shady Brook is the perfect setting to host Outdoor Education and Environmental programs.

Bringing the classroom outside is an important part of a student’s learning experience. Our Outdoor Education programs provide the perfect opportunity to enable children to learn outside of the classroom in a beautiful mountain setting.

Our programs can be tailored around a specific focus to meet your curriculum needs, while engaging campers and allowing them to play an active role in their learning.

Whatever your outdoor focus is, we have a lesson plan for you.

Outdoor environmental education

With more schools recognizing the importance of OEE, Camp Shady Brook can help you to meet your educational goals. Developing awareness, increasing knowledge and building skills surrounding outdoor learning is our main priority.

Our OEE programs are taught by trained instructors, who teach with your educational goals in mind. Programs offered can be tailored to meet your specific focus and meet Colorado state educational guidelines.

Lesson plans include, but are not limited to:

  • Fire and Forest Ecology
  • Outdoor Survival Skills
  • Orienteering
  • Compass Basics
  • Water Exploration
  • Night Watchers Night Hike
  • Astronomy
  • Nature Hikes

Each lesson plan involves students to use those core skills such as teamwork, communication and reading and writing skills. In addition to OEE programs and learning, your students will experience living with others, sharing dining hall duties, cabin clean-up and group games and projects.

We offer healthy, delicious balanced meals and comfortable lodging. Day trips, multi-day and overnight retreats are available.

So get out of the classroom and come and experience focused learning outside! We can’t wait to have you here.
